Hey printmaker friends,

I am about to begin my first application for a residency and ~~I am terrified~~ was wondering if you could pass along any pointers as well as experiences? I could really use some support with this especially having a bit of a quarter life crisis!

So this summer has been one of discovery. Besides photo I decided to try to learn to love painting again, and it was singularly the most difficult, frustrating and miserable experience of my life….until about a week ago that is. This class was taught by Cornelia Shulz who helped me through this with saint like patience and encouragement. Eventually she told me you only have 4 more classes until you are not only done with this class, but college so do what you did as a kid: play. Put away your sketchbook, stop planning your pieces like you are going to war, and put your ideas directly on the canvas and stay loose.

So I did. It was difficult at first because this is such an alien way of doing this. But soon I threw myself wholeheartly into the paintings. And so I wanted to share, I love them - they aren’t masterpieces but they are a gateway to a new direction and a reconnection with the uninhibited way that I used to approach art as a child.

So I took a beginning photo class and this appears to be the beginning of a beautiful friendship. I’m trying to figure out a way to incorporate it into my other work. But here is the result of two ferry rides, two trips to sf, and a collective 30 hours in the darkroom over the course of two days worth of work.

I’m at a cross roads. I’m graduating from my undergrad and I’m facing this looming decision of What The Fuck Do I Do Next. I’ve been looking at residencies because I’m not keen to immerse my self in the bureaucratic bullshit that my experience at University has been. But I look at my work and can’t help but think I don’t measure up for either grad school or residencies. This isn’t a fishing trip for flattery I am genuinely curious about how others (you) have dealt with this, where you applied, which route you went and why.
